Finally, a true 4 inch honeycomb core, now made in Australia by Vintage Honeycomb Radiator Company.
Up until now, if you lived in the Southern Hemisphere and wanted a 4 inch honeycomb core, you either bought it from the Northern Hemisphere or put up with the “other” way out: double stack 2 x 2 inch cores beside each other!
This is something I have always refused to do because a honeycomb core has a ¼ inch soldered face on each side that does no work. So the working area is always ½ inch less than the total thickness of the core. If you double stack cores to make 4 inches, that just means even more dead weight. You will get only 3 inches of working core, as opposed to 3½ inches from a monolithic 4 inch core.
I had a customer call me from Western Australia wanting a 4 inch core for a 1931 V16 Cadillac. He bought this core from the US in the past, suspecting it actually came from the UK. On testing the cores they found it so badly blocked with solder that it was never fitted.
I agreed to have my 3½ die set split down the middle to allow for the manufacture of 3½ or 4 inch cores using removable sections. After some testing and modifications the Cadillac is now complete and on its way back to Western Australia.
The first job was to have a slitting gauge made to allow us to slit the 4 inch copper from the 12 inch master roll. This happened and the rest is history. See the slitting machine page.
I have included photos of the cores from start to finish here.
